Functional Medicine FAQs

These are some of the most common questions Dr Rosman receives.  If your question is not presented here, no worries.  Feel free to ask during your free introductory conversation. So, with that in mind, here are the most common questions with some brief responses for your information.

It is advised that you read through all of the following FAQs and all of the information provided about Functional Medicine on this site. This is a great help to you and others have found in very important.

Take a breath.  Take your time.  Dr. Rosman knows that for most people who want to make an appointment to see him, he is not the first clinician from whom they have sought help.  Most people are frustrated and not feeling well.  Functional Medicine is different.  You may know that already or your may come to that conclusion after reading all of the recommended material.  Dr. Rosman has been involved in the Functional Medicine professional community since the 1990s and has treated more than 15,000 patients.  You have come to the right place.  He values your concerns and he values YOU.  Please open your mind and open your heart to the possibilities of a healthier future with a greater quality of life.

This is a 20 minute phone call or secure video chat with Dr. Rosman during which you will briefly present your reasons for contacting him and what your history of previous medical care has been.  This conversation will provide Dr. Rosman with sufficient information to determine if he can help you and will agree to accept you into his practice. Due to the number of those seeking his help, Dr. Rosman simply cannot accept as patients all who may contact him.  His intention is to help all who seek his care, and he will do everything possible to do so.  It is a privilege to be asked to help you reclaim your wellness – – which is your birthright.  Since, the foundation of Functional Medicine is that each patient becomes an active participant in her or his own healing, your readiness to accept recommendations for diet, exercise, supplement protocols, lifestyle and habit change and willingness to follow through on tests and assessments that Dr. Rosman recommends are matters he considers important.

Also, it is important for you to read all of the information about Functional Medicine on this page.  It is a process of addressing underlying factors that may be contributing to the reasons for your call.  Patients are participants in their own care because recommended protocols from Dr. Rosman will require your cooperation and willingness to comply with dietary, lifestyle, habit and behavioral changes and other aspects of care he determines are called for as a result of thorough assessment and evaluation of your case, your history, your current medical care, Functional Diagnostic labs and assessments, and his many years of experience.

Once Dr. Rosman has accepted you as a patient, please contact him to make an appointment for the Initial Consultation which is a phone call or video chat.

This Initial Consultation that will last between 45-75 minutes, depending upon the complexity of your case.

After the results of the tests and assessments Dr. Rosman has recommended for you are received and after your previous medical records are reviewed by him, you will be scheduled for a Report of Findings at which time he will present his evaluation and an initial protocol.  This session will last between 45-60 minutes.

Routine follow-up consultations will be scheduled for every 4-6 weeks, depending upon your progress and the complexity of your case.  These sessions will last between 30-45 minutes.  Once progress is consistent, the follow-up appointments will become less frequent.

In between follow-up consultations, brief phone consultations are available by personal request.

Brief email questions will receive a response within 24 hours.  If these emails become sufficiently frequent and sufficiently complex as to require a phone consultation or video chat, you will be advised to schedule an appointment.

Please schedule an appointment by phone or email.   Obtain and send to the office all medical tests and reports from the past year, as well as any tests and reports THAT ARE TRULY RELEVANT from previous years.  Dr. Rosman reviews and assesses these at no cost to you.

Also, once you have scheduled an appointment, a questionnaire will be sent to you by email.  This is a lengthy questionnaire and may require an hour or so to complete.  Dr. Rosman is exceptionally thorough. He wants to take a comprehensive look at the big picture and, at the same time, take a very close look at details.  Often specialists look at their tests and prescriptions without interest in the total case.  Functional Medicine is an approach that takes into account all of the physiological, musculoskeletal, biochemical, lifestyle, dietary, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical aspects of your concerns and your condition. So, rest assured that as long as it takes you to complete the questionnaire will only be a fraction of the time that Dr. Rosman will spend reviewing and evaluating it.

Please obtain or print out the forms found on the New Patient page and send them to Dr. Rosman prior to your scheduled appointment.  You may fax them, scan or email them or send them by postal service.

It may be of value to ask a spouse, adult child, relative or friend to be present with you during the phone/video connsultation.  There will be a lot of information discussed at this appointment and most certainly at the Report of Findings. It is best to have two sets of ears.  Too often, people arrive home after these appointments and forget what they are to do and why.  That often leads to scheduling another appointment at additional expense to clarify matters, and that also delays getting started on the protocols.  When you have not felt well for a while, you do not want to wait longer than necessary to get started and you do not want to misunderstand nor neglect recommendations for your care.

Please be prompt.  Demands for Functional Medicine consultations are substantial, and any time lost if you are late is just that – – time lost that cannot be made up at the time of that appointment.

If you need to cancel your appointment, Dr. Rosman requires 24-hour notice.

Dr. Rosman will present the results of any tests and assessments.  He will discuss them with you and present an initial protocol of recommendations for your care.  This may involve any or all of the following:  diet; exercise; stress management; nutritional supplements; lifestyle recommendations, tips for changing habits, mind-set and behaviors; and many other holistic options he has been trained to offer you.

No. I do not prescribe nor make recommendations about prescription medications or controlled substances. Your prescribing medical doctor will manage all medications, and I welcome the opportunity to develop a cooperative, professional relationship with any of your physicians.  I seek collaboration and value it, for your sake.  I use natural, noninvasive methods such as diet and food coaching, botanical and nutrition supplements, homeopathic remedies, stress management and other mind/body techniques, lifestyle and life coaching, practical and personalized exercise and movement coaching.  It is my intention to address the underlying causes of any disease or medical condition diagnosed by your physicians in order to promote optimal function and health.  Functional Medicine diagnostic lab testing may be recommended to provide information often missed or not even considered by other healthcare clinicians that may help me identify underlying factors contributing to the reasons you have sought my help.

Over the past 20 years, it is very clear to me that my consultations are considered preventative and elective.  The conventional system of reimbursement does not consider “wellness care”, prevention, and elective care to warrant reimbursement.  However,  I have always  done  everything I can to make sure Functional Medicine assessment and care are affordable and available to as many of you who seek my help as possible.  For all of my years in practice, I have consistently provided care whose fees are well below the standard fees of others who claim to practice as I do.  My initial 20 minute consultation is at no cost to you.  All of the hours upon hours of analysis I  spend on your diagnostic assessments and my review of your previous medical tests and reports are at no cost to you.  This is my good faith offering to you as a gesture of my sincere desire to be of help and service.  You have spent so much time and money already seeking help and more importantly SEEKING RESULTS.   I have always endeavored to do all I can to welcome you and work with you.

Yes, I offer long-distance consultations (national and international) via telephone or video chat. I’ve worked with clients all over North America, Europe, Canada, and elsewhere around the world.

The answer to this question depends on several factors, including, but not limited to: the complexity of your condition; how long you’ve had it; how much time, energy and attention you’re willing to devote to treatment; and how well you respond to treatment.  In general, when your health conditions are complex and chronic, it is reasonable and responsible to anticipate that our work together will take time.  However, many, many people start seeing improvements sooner than with previous care.  You  may elect to continue with a maintenance program and brief, infrequent consultations after recommended treatment plans are finished.  We both may agree that complex and chronic issues are best served with infrequent, scheduled “check-ups.”

The Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulate laboratory testing and require clinical laboratories to be certificated by their state as well as the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) before they can accept human samples for diagnostic testing.  LabCorp, Quest, Suncoast, and others you may use for your physicians’ prescribed tests are CLIA labs.   The laboratory testing done in Functional Medicine is one critical part of creating your personalized treatment plan. The labs I use are CLIA labs, too.  Often functional diagnostic tests are provided conveniently in test ktis that you use at home and mail to the labs yourself.  Blood tests can be drawn in local labs.

Conventional Clinical Approach  vs. Functional Medicine Approach
  • Focuses on the illness or disease itself, not on the underlying causes leading to it.
  • Focuses on suboptimal functioning of the body’s systems as the underlying cause of illness and disease.
  • Treatment focuses on palliating the signs and symptoms of an illness. Does not address causes.
  • Treatment focuses on correcting the functional imbalances and causes.
  • Organ systems and functions are independent of each other and acting alone.
  • Holistic approach that realizes the interconnectedness of the organ systems and functions.
  • Lab tests focus on disease.
  • Lab tests focus on optimal functioning. Tests are useful before disease can be identified and also identify suboptimal states.
  • Lab results identify the  who and the what, but not the causes.
  • Lab results identify the whys and causes symptoms are happening.. Necessary for treating the causes.
  • Lab results are based on a comparative with the inclusion of very sick people. This grossly alters normal healthy values.
  • Lab results are comparative to healthy people. Don’t you want your lab results to reflect healthy values?
  • Lab results are compared to the statistical average for the population.
  • Lab results are compared to what is normal for the individual.
  • Lab results have severe limitations to explain.
  • Lab results help explain the possible underlying  causes.
  • The results, which show “what,” are not link to the therapeutic treatment.
  • The results, which show “why,” act as a guideline for treatment.

The core clinical imbalances that arise can be:

  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • External and internal stress
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Neurotransmitter imbalances
  • Free radical damage & inflammation
  • Toxins & poor detoxification
  • Poor digestive disorder or microbiological imbalances
  • Poor energy production in the cell
  • Immune imbalances
  • And others that testing will help us identify
